And your tests have begun. This is the second question in the series of questions. The first one was Should KKR go in with a 7/4 or 6/5 combination?!
It is more or less a given that Brendon McCullum would not be able to make it for the first few matches of IPL. As a coach, your duty is to move on from players who are not there in the squad and make up the best combination from those available. Of course, the option that is easily visible is Akash Chopra. Can you as a coach really trust this fellow?
And that too with Sourav Ganguly in the team? If opening for India is a consideration, than Sourav is certainly a better contender.
So,
Question No 2: Who should open with Chris Gayle in the eventuality that Brendon McCullum is not available? Sourav Ganguly or Akash Chopra? Support your answers with justification.

Akash Chopra is a decent Indian batsman opener and Sourav is more needed in the middle order. There is not much option here. Period.

ReplyDeleteI think that it is right to stick with Chris Gayle and Akash Chopra as a current opening pair for K.K.R. in absence of Brendon McCullum. It is because it maintains a left hand and right hand combination, which will create some problems for the opposition blower to deal with. More if both the attacking batsman, i.e., C. Gayle and Dada comes and gets out quick in the hurry of getting some quick runs, it will create pressure in the middle order.
So,it will be better to stick with Gayle and Chopra as the opening pair.
c.pujaara is also a good player u can use him as an another opener.

Dada requires some bowl to settle and Chris Gayle is a hard hitter who can utilize the power play and Dada have to just rotate the strike till gayle is at the crease, staying at the crease itself will boost Dada's morale and can blast if he stays for few minutes.

Til these times the world of cricket didnt see a man who smashes the ball to the boundary in off side as dada did. During da power play he can make use of its shots which will move to boundaries especially in the off side. If gayle too fire with dada after the powerplay or before ending the powerplay the spinners will come in action and dada is a good hitter of spinners tooo .

Though akash is a good choice, you need someone who could inspire you and not get intimidated. Who else other than Dada will fit the bill. Moreover Akash at one or two down will give a much needed stability which is missing in T20 and if required he can at the required rate.Seeing a soft partner at the other end like Akash might trouble Chris whereas with Dada even his body language will inspire you. I think this is the best team that could perform well for KKR.I think Owais Shah could take the place of any other player who doesnt performs.this is a very good bowling attack with bond and Sharma.
Akash chopra cannot be a decent batsman in T20s obviously DADA suits the positiob god... If DADA is needed in the middle order then you can opt for Hodge..

ReplyDeleteUntil Chris Gayle and/or Brendon McCullum are available, Sourav should open the innings as Owais Shah and Angelo Matthews are available in the middle order to steady things or go for the bowling as the case may be and Manoj Tiwari should be more handy in the middle order than at the top. Considering the kind of squad KKR has, I don't think Aakash Chopra comes close to playing in the 11, except in case of injuries.

I think Sourav & Gayle would be the best choice for opening combination. Both the players have huge experience. Gayle will take the attacking roll, Sourav will strategise the game from front. If Gayle is out, then Owais Shah will come, as he has the power & nerve both, a rare combination & most usefull in T20, else Brad Hodge, followed by Angelo, cause Owais & Angelo have already set their understanding in tremendous pressure. We should capitalise on that. Then Manoj or Cheteswar, Ridhdhiman, Laxmi or Langdvelt, Murli, Bond & Ishant

Gayle can go for the kill and Dada should hold one end.Dada should try to bat throughout the innings and allw others to come and attack at the other end...As there are other good players like Owias Shah Hodge and Angelo..Ganguly need not have to fear about the middle order

ReplyDeleteThey should open with Pujara. Remember Pujara is the most promising talent in batting the country has at present. He is a natural opener, just the fact that hi state team gets extra stability with him being in the middle order has forced him not to open. I think KKR should give him a chance to open.

ReplyDeleteAs McCullam and Gayle not appearing for the first half of our matches, it will be best for Saurav Dada to open with Pujara,as we are playing an aggressive format of the game. After the arrival of McCullam, drop Saha from the side as McCullam is agressive and efficient than Saha to keep the wickets. Let Hodge come at First down and followed by Shah or Rohan.If Gayle is available then drop Hodge. Give a chance to Rohan at no5 or 6 as he is a good striker of the cricket ball and usefull bowler and a great fielder too. Langevelt and Ishanth should share the new ball,till the arrival of Bond. Use Mathews efficiently as he proved his caliber in last match. Decide his batting position according to the situation of the game. Target 200 runs for all matches, dont trust in winning combination of the first match as it favoured luck a lot. Dada you should bowl one or two overs after the power play I mean between 7 to 10. ReplyDeleteDefinitely Dada and Gayle should open for KKR just for the reason that they both are fantastic players... and they both can hit the ball out of the park easily.. so if they both give KKR a stand of Even 70-80 i think the rest of the guys dont have much to do with... just come hit and go.. and if KKR reaches above 160 i think the bowlers are good enough to control any team.. so definitely dada and Gayle should open together.

ReplyDeleteI think We have to stick with Chris Gayle & Akash Chopra.Because this pair creates problems for the opponent AS due to left Right Combination. Dada will come on 1 down,probably the best spot for him....
So,if Chris gayle decided to fire,then Akash Chopra will Keep Wicket in hand.Falling early wickets always put pressure on the middle order Players.So,If CHris Gayle fires ,It`s good.

Hi to all, I go for Gayle opening with Chopra. As Gayle is the devil opener for opposition and chopra is decent batsman. If chopra can rotate the strike it helps gayle to take the momentum on...More it will be difficult of opposition to set field due right & left combination.(Time to think for opposition)

sourav ganguly is a good opener from a long time with sachin tendulkar.He seems to be an experienced cricketer rather batsman to open. So chris gayle along with sourav ganguly will be a good opening for the KKR's from my opinion, if McCullum is not playing in the game.But if McCullum is there then i think gayle with McCullum will be a perfect t20 opening for KKR's team as both r hard-hitters. sourav ganguly will be there to come on 1st down.
ReplyDeleteSourav Ganguly should open the innings. His contribution to the team is two fold -- as an inspirational captain and as a batsman/bowler. The Captain should lead from the front since he has the skill to do it. Opening the innings will be a statement of intent to his team mates as well as to the opposition.
ReplyDeleteOpening the innings will also give him more time at the crease. All he needs is to hold one end up, rotate the strike, encourage the batsman at the other end and hit the occasional four. The rest, as they say, will follow.

ReplyDeleteI have no idea why most of the people think negative (like dada should be coming first down, middle order to stabilize the innings etc)!!!
I have some important points to make and some questions to ask.
Does everyone has in mind that the opening pair will fail most of the time and the reason why you want dada to be in first down of middle order?
We all know getting a good start is 'half the battle won' then why not we put in our best soldiers up front??? And who better than dada, who has been one of the most successful opening batsman to lead the fronline!!!
We should have our best to counter the best!
Have an instinct to win not just play...its a war and no one wins a war by just fighting it out ... WARS ARE WON BY FINISHING THE OPPONENTS!!!
We need to inject this thought within KKR regiment and am sure we will do better than what we are at this stage.

i think gayle nd gaungly is the best option to open in T-20 Format.... After that tewari and Mcculam can do better..... But very important is that the bolwer is the strength of the Team so please Languawlt and Bond must be in team.....

I want that Dada should come at number 4 when the spinners r in action and we all know that in whole world only DADA can hit the best spinners at his will. Also If Tiwary can come at number 5, instead of opening he can also make most of use of his batting.so if KNIGHT Riders try this combination, they can get better results.
I think Saha should be opening with Gayle. Dada, Tiwary and Hodge are needed to strengthen the middle order. Then we have Rohan, Matthews to finish the innings.

I think Saurav ganguly should open with macculam, and if he is not available then with

Actually this team is so good but the combination is not so good infact the batting line up. KKR should choose all rounders who can bat as well can bowl see an example of rohit sharma, andrew symonds in deccan chargers, In T20 no bowlers can perfprm upto their reputation in international circuit. Big names does not matter. AKash chopra, saha, pujara are the week side of KKR. saha except keeping he doesnt know how to play hes so ugly to watch playing.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Sourav should not open the match with Chriss because, when the match inning starts there is a huge pressure.. Ball is new and has lot of swing and bounce. Ganguly's stand is always crucial from teams perspective as his presence really matters for the team. So his wicket is more important. Pujara would be a good option to start with. Sourav should come 2 down instead of one down I feel so that he can attack spinners big time.. His strength is more against spinner that pacemen..

chris gayle and owasis shah is better option bcos they both can take benefit of first six overs they can easily loft a ball over the inside circle which can give a great start to play and can make opposite team thinking to choose better bowlers and in this way pressure will build up on opposite team....go and win
